Skyscraper / High-Rise Architecture

A high-rise is a tall, multi-storied building or structure equipped with elevators. Although there is no set standard, a high rise is typically anything taller that ten or twelve storeys — but the term can be applied empirically based on its surroundings. A loose convention in the United States and Europe now draws the lower limit of a skyscraper at 150 meters (500 ft) — although this is not always the case. Shorter buildings are still sometimes referred to as skyscrapers if they appear to dominate their surroundings. A skyscraper taller than 300 meters (984 ft) may be referred to as supertall. High-rise or skyscraper buildings are usually residential (high-rise apartment building) or commercial in nature.

For anybody that has not checked it out, the architecture magazine Archivos de Arquitectura Antillana came out with a special edition issue on Miami a few months ago. Issue 32, the Miami Special Edition, covers a nice range of new buildings in the city.  The magazine highlights many of Miami’s established and young architecture firms and includes  floor [...]

1450 Brickell Hurricane Testing

A couple weeks ago I wrote about the hurricane resistant curtain wall system for 1450 Brickell Avenue — the office tower rising at the south end of Brickell Avenue will have the nations most wind-resistant “Curtain Wall System”.  Combined with a LEED Gold pre-certification, this new building is pushing the envelope in sustainability within South Florida.

Historic Bacardi Building

The Miami Herald is reporting that talks are under way to pursue historic designation for the unique Bacardi Museum Building on Biscayne Boulevard near Downtown Miami (Midtown Miami). Designed in the International Style and outfitted with tropical and caribbean decorations — the site, comprised of three components, is a unique interpretation of the MIMO style (Miami Modern).

2 Iconic London Skyscrapers

Skyscrapers are interesting structures.  They hold massive amounts of people within a limited footprint and influence the city well beyond their immediate surroundings. They are proof of technological innovation and superiority over nature, and provide means for man to extend his ego.  Skyscrapers contribute to the image of the city, and now a days, they are [...]

Top Of The Rock – 30 Rockefeller Plaza

I can think of no better place than New York City to start discussing cities. New York City is the grandest and most impressive American city, and is perhaps one of the greatest cities in the world. In all my years of travel I have never been to a place that has the impact and power that the Big Apple impresses upon its visitors. New York city is true urban wonder that physically symbolizes in stone what man has and can accomplish given the right tools and set of circumstances.
